Taylor Swift stole the show at this year's MTV Video Music Awards in a Hollywood starlet midnight-blue gown.

The country pop crossover singer chose a second-skin dress featuring a daring, plunging embellished neckline by Herve Leger by Max Azria.

She finished off the retro look by wearing her hair in finger curls and her signature red lipstick, while lashings of shimmery eye shadow and mascara defined her eyes.

Disney star Selena Gomez also went for a navy evening dress for the occasion, wearing a Aterlier Versace number with a thigh-high split.
The dress, which was held together by silver clasps, featured a sheer black exposed bustier. She kept the rest of the look simple, wearing her long locks straight in a side parting, while a pair of emerald green earrings were the only accessories she needed

Miley Cyrus went for a 90s revival look, wearing a bejewelled two-piece spandex ensemble which showed off her toned mid-riff. She paired the outfit with black platform heels and raver pigtail buns.

Katy Perry failed to impress in a heavily shoulder-padded leopard print dress by Emanuel Ungaro.

She wore a boxing-inspired ensemble for her performance.

Lady Gaga went for an uncharacteristically demure leather fishtail dress by Prabal Gurung, which featured an oversized bow at the waist.

Rita Ora chose a plunging ice-blue gown with long feathered train, showing off her legs with a thigh-high split.

The 'I Knew You Were Trouble' singer channeled old Hollywood glamour in a glittering black Herve Leger gown complete with a plunging back.
Retro ringlets, a smoky eye and red pout gave the singer a polished yet still vampy look.

NEW YORK (AP) — The clothes that had everyone talking at MTV's Video Music Awards were mostly notable for their absence.

Miley Cyrus appeared on stage in a revealing leotard, then stripped down to a nude bikini to twerk for Robin Thicke, a protruding tongue her most prominent accessory. Lady Gaga started out in a modified nun habit before stripping to a Birth of Venus-inspired clamshell-bra bikini.

On the red carpet, though, skin was revealed a little more strategically. Even Gaga's Prabal Gurung gown, made of lame bonded satin, had a sweetheart neckline and sweet rosettes. Katy Perry flashed a lot of leg in a leopard-print Emanuel Ungaro, along with a grill that said "Roar," promoting her new single.

Taylor Swift wore an Herve Leger gown with a plunging neckline in elegant navy that matched good friend Selena Gomez — who showed some leg and seemingly half a bra in her custom Versace dress. Rita Ora had a feathered train so long she needed help carrying her gown by Alexandre Vauthier, but still flashed plenty of leg.

Among the men, Video Vanguard award winner Justin Timberlake wore a suit — but no tie. It was a look Robin Thicke also chose for the red carpet, before changing into a striped zoot suit for his performance.
Macklemore — the night's other big winner with Ryan Lewis — wore a powder blue suit and fur. (No word if it came from a thrift shop.)

Taylor Swift's VMAs 2013 Dress Is Straight Out Of A Vintage Hollywood Movie (PHOTOS)

Taylor Swift doesn't have the most seamless track record at the MTV Video Music Awards, but that hasn't stopped the singer from making strong style statements on the event's red carpet.

During her fateful 2009 on-stage meeting with Kanye West (need a refresher?), T-Swift wore her signature look at the time: a floor-length, glittery confection. But last year, the star came out strong in a white power suit. So how would she switch things up for this year's big event?

By channeling a 1920s period film, apparently. Tay went the whole nine yards on the red carpet: red lips, a bob with finger waves and a slinky, glittery dress by Hervé Léger by Max Azria. As People.com's Andrea Lavinthal put it, "Taylor's hair is what Donna Martin would've done for a '20s costume party at the Peach Pit After Dark."

Check out the pics below. Do you love this high-wattage look or does it look too costumey?

No purple pasty this year!
At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, celebs ditched the wild outfits and instead opted for gorgeous Grammy-ready gowns.
Leading the pack of elegant stars? Taylor Swift . The star was simply stunning in a plunging Herve Leger by Max Azria gown. She completed her retro look with finger curls and her signature sassy red lip.
Equally as beautiful in navy was her bestie Selena Gomez (think they planned to wear the same color?), who for the second big event in a row opted for a thigh high split. This time her Atelier Versace gown only had one split but the top had an exposed bustier, which added even more va-va-voom to her look.

Also going with a sheer effect, Ciara glowed in a Givenchy creation with perfectly placed crystal embellishments and a feather hemline. The dress even had built in gloves, which may seem very familar to fashion fans.
These awe-inspiring looks had us begging for more, so we tapped celebrity stylist Nicole Chavez for additional insight.
"This year's red carpet empitomized the art of fashion as a form of self-expression, from Katy Perry expressing her wild and independent side in leopard to Selena Gomez expressing her sexy, mature side in her stunning illusion bodice gown. Stores like T.J.Maxx serve as a creative playground to find those designer embellished pieces that allow you to express your personal style," she told us.
Gowns aside, there were a few pretty above-the-knee ensembles. Allison Williams was the definition of lovely in a white Valentino mini while Shailene Woodley proved the crop top can look lady-like by pairing it with a printed Emilio Pucci skirt.

The Hot New Collection Everyone's Talking About...

Iconic fashion house Hervé Léger has been worn by everyone from Victoria Beckham to Kate Winslet, with the bandage dress fast becoming a timeless piece that sits in every fashion follower's wardrobe.
Now, The Outnet is looking to celebrate the Léger look by putting together an edit of the designer's most covetable dresses.

A household name, the brand is renowned for producing body-con dresses, famed for their ability to flatter very woman's shape - and one of the most recognisable and sought after silhouettes of all time.

Alongside the Hervé Léger edit, The Outnet has collaborated with Calum MacDiarmid to produce an exclusive video,  and called upon brand ambassador, model, Annabelle Dexter-Jones to show off the pretty pieces.

Annabelle spoke of her passion for Hervé Léger’: 'I really feel like a woman in an Hervé Léger dress,' she explains. 'These dresses speak for themselves – they're sexy enough that you can just throw on a pair of loafers.'

From body-con to fit and flare, The Outnet has you covered. All you have to do is hunt out your Hervé - there's one for everyone.

The Outnet's exclusive edit of Hervé Léger’s pieces (all available at up to 65% off) goes live today. Be sure not to miss out on getting your hands on such a cult classic - and at such discounted prices.

The original bodycon: Hervé Léger at the Outnet

The French designer’s famous bodycon bandage dresses are on sale at The Outnet, with up to 65% off their RRPs.

Hervé Léger is a bit of a joke in the fashion world by now – blame Lindsay Lohan and pob-era Victoria Beckham – but no one can deny the influence of the French designer’s bodycon dresses on our fashion horizon.
And though the high street has spawned thousands of copycats, until you’ve seen and felt an original Hervé Léger, it’s tough to see what the appeal is of these €1,000-plus rayon-, nylon- and elastane-mix dresses. These babies are fabric powerhouses: first off, they’re heavy. In many cases, they may in fact weigh more than the women wearing them (that is a slight exaggeration). In all seriousness though, there is serious heft in these babies.

Think of them a bit like the Spanx of eveningwear: HL dresses are made of the tightest, stretchiest fabric imaginable, so that they suck you in and firm you up in all the right places. I remember using one, from Brown Thomas, in one of my first-ever Xposé shoots, and the model was so taken aback by how heavy and powerful it was – and though she started off aghast at the idea of spending €1,700 on a dress, by the end of the day she was pledging to save up for one.

For Hervé Léger converts, then, the latest influx of the designer’s dresses at The Outnet - with up to 65 per cent off – will be a godsend, and Net-a-Porter’s discount sister site is obviously excited about the news, too, enlisting DJ Alex Merrell (above) and model and actress Annabelle Dexter-Jones (top) to star in a campaign promoting the new drop.

Will I be buying one? It’s unlikely - I just don’t think I’m the bodycon type. But if I was, and I had the money, I would go for it, without a second thought for Posh, Lindsay, or the thousands of bags of Cadbury’s Caramel Nibbles I could be buying with that money.
